Power plants, whether fueled by gas or coal, consume significant amounts of water in their production processes. Water, often drawn from sources such as rivers or lakes, is primarily used for cooling and plant equipment washing.
Today, we highlight the success story of the gas-fired power plant in Beni Suef, Egypt, located approximately 100 kilometers from the capital, Cairo. We were involved in the flash mixing phase of industrial wastewater treatment at the Beni Suef combined cycle power plant, boasting a total capacity of 4.8 GW and capable of providing electricity to 15 million Egyptians.
Combined Cycle Power Plants (CCPP) are energy production facilities that leverage two distinct cycles: a gas and a steam cycle. This approach enables higher overall efficiency compared to many other types of power plants while still maintaining substantial water consumption.
Flash mixing or rapid mixing facilitates the coagulation of suspended solids in wastewater through specific chemicals. This phase is one of the first in wastewater treatment and is crucial for the success of the entire process. As the name suggests, this phase occurs rapidly, with duration being a central factor for flash mixing.
At the Beni Suef plant, we intervened in two flash mixing tanks, each with a capacity of 126m3. We designed and implemented two vertical agitators GPL.D5301.S.290, always paired with our impeller 3PM-0030. The high efficiency of the impeller, featuring a hydrodynamically optimized profile for this phase, ensures a high flow rate and optimization of energy consumption.
All parts that come into contact with liquids were made of AISI 316L stainless steel, ensuring superior corrosion resistance — an essential aspect in water treatment plants.
